Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of verb conjugations in 4- to 6-year old normal Korean-speaking children using nine declinable words for production tasks. Previous studies have mostly reported the frequency of conjugation production or the appropriateness of meaning. The present study focused on the accuracy of conjugated forms.
Methods: Sixty normal children age 4 to 6 participated in this study. Each subject was presented with nine picture cards representing nine declinable words: (¡®sada (buy)¡¯, ¡®meokda (eat)¡¯, ¡®bulda (blow up)¡¯, ¡®sseuda (write)¡¯, ¡®jareuda (cut)¡¯, ¡®gupda (broil)¡¯, ¡®deutda (listen to)¡¯, ¡®norata (be yellow)¡¯, ¡®gongbuhada (study)¡¯). After being presented with a card, each subject was asked to conjugate the verb with five endings: (¡®-nikka (causality)¡¯, ¡®-myeon (condition)¡¯, ¡®-seo (causality)¡¯, ¡®-go (succession)¡¯, ¡®-atda (past tense)¡¯).
Results: The results were as follows. The accuracy of conjugations improved progressively as the children increased in age. The endings ¡®-seo¡¯, ¡®-go (succession)¡¯, ¡®-atda (past tense)¡¯ improved earlier than other endings. The declinable words ¡®deutda¡¯, ¡®bulda¡¯, ¡®gupda¡¯, ¡®norata¡¯ were more difficult to conjugate than other declinable words. The types and counts of errors decreased progressively as age increased.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the results indicate that the use of conjugations with accurate forms stabilizes around the age of 6 in normal Korean children.
